We often think that a thing exists first and that an image is then made to represent it. Barad calls this separation between the world and its representation representationalism. Her proposal changes the question: instead of checking whether an image accurately copies an already defined reality, she examines the practices that allow something to appear as object, measurement, or image.
To explain this, Barad uses the term intra-action. In an interaction, two things already exist and then enter into relation. In an intra-action, what each part is and the boundaries separating them take shape within the relation. This does not mean that nothing exists, but that the boundaries between things are not always fixed in advance.
The apparatus is the concrete arrangement that makes observation possible: it includes instruments, bodies, rules, and material conditions. This arrangement produces an agential cut, a separation between what appears as object and what acts as the means of observation. Barad calls this inseparable set of parts and relations a phenomenon, rather than the isolated object. If the apparatus changes, these distinctions may change as well.
Look at a photograph of a protest posted on a social platform. It seems simply to show protesters, police, and a street. Yet what you see also depends on the camera, framing, cropping, the text accompanying the photograph, and the interface that decides its size and position.
Find the original file or the fullest available version. Check who took the photograph, its date, place, and position in the sequence. Then compare the crop, read the added text, and examine the preceding and following images. Note what changes position: what moves to the center, what remains context, and what disappears.
This does not mean that the interface invents the protest. It means that the interface organizes how the event reaches you and which relations you can recognize. The apparatus does not create everything, but it participates in separating what is visible from what remains outside. Which boundary seemed natural before making the comparison?
