La materialidad de los medios empieza antes de que algo se convierta en “medio”. Metales, minerales, productos químicos, energía, extracción y cadenas de producción hacen posibles pantallas, redes, computadores y dispositivos.
Parikka radicaliza el “tiempo profundo” de los medios: no sólo se trata de historias antiguas de aparatos, sino de duraciones geológicas. Los materiales de un dispositivo pueden haberse formado durante millones de años antes de entrar en una tecnología de vida útil muy breve.
El proceso tampoco termina con el uso. Obsolescencia, chatarra y e-waste devuelven los medios a circuitos materiales y ambientales. La historia de un medio continúa en sus residuos.
The materiality of media begins before something becomes “media.” Metals, minerals, chemicals, energy, extraction and production chains make screens, networks, computers and devices possible.
Parikka radicalizes media “deep time”: it is not only about old histories of apparatuses but geological durations. The materials in a device may have formed over millions of years before entering a technology with a very short usable life.
The process does not end with use either. Obsolescence, scrap and e-waste return media to material and environmental circuits. The history of a medium continues in its residues.

Parikka empuja el problema un nivel más abajo: el propio sistema depende de materiales, energía, extracción, infraestructura y trabajo que normalmente no aparecen en la imagen. Flusser's carry asked which transformations a system can allow or exclude before an image comes into existence. Parikka pushes the problem one level lower: the system itself depends on materials, energy, extraction, infrastructure and labor that normally do not appear in the image.
