UPDATING TO
REMAIN THE SAME
Chun proposes that we stop looking at digital media only as novelties. We also need to observe what happens when a network, platform, or interface becomes ordinary and begins organizing how we search, remember, and relate to one another.
A habit is an action learned through repetition. It does not disappear when we stop thinking about it: it continues in gestures such as unlocking, scrolling, or refreshing a screen. Chun therefore argues that habits remain by withdrawing from consciousness, and that obsolete media can survive in the bodies of those who used them.
A crisis interrupts that familiarity: a security warning, an incompatibility, or a service that stops working demands action. An update responds to this urgency. It modifies the system, but it may also restore our ability to use it almost as before. Hence the title's paradox: updating to remain close to the same.
For a digital image, this continuity does not belong to the file alone. It also depends on formats, interfaces, and learned gestures that let us find, open, and recognize it. If those conditions are updated, the image may continue to look the same even as our way of reaching it changes.
Your phone displays a notification: “A memory from five years ago.” Before opening it, find the original photograph in the album. Check its date, full frame, the images that came before and after it, and any associated text.
Now open the memory. Notice which crop it uses, which title it adds, where it places the image in the sequence, and whether it adds music or motion. The interface does not merely retrieve a file: it prepares a way of seeing it again and directs attention toward some relations rather than others.
This does not prove that the update altered the original photograph. It shows something more specific: the conditions of access and reading changed, while the gesture of tapping the notification felt familiar. What did the update preserve, and what did it teach you to do again?
A retainer is an orthodontic device that helps preserve the position of teeth after treatment. TSIL imports the word to test Chun's paradox: persistence may require repeated intervention. It is not a concept used by the author.
The comparison fails if it assumes a final position that only needs to be preserved. An update can also introduce new functions, dependencies, and habits, or render previous ones obsolete. It does not simply protect the same arrangement: it negotiates what can continue, and under which conditions.
