THE
WRETCHED
OF THE SCREEN
Steyerl calls an image poor when it has been compressed, copied and forwarded so many times that it loses quality and context. Its value no longer depends on being sharp or original, but on how widely it circulates and the relations it activates.
In linear perspective, the viewer imagines standing still before a stable horizon. That horizon works as a “ground”: it organizes above and below, near and far, subject and object. Aerial views, digital maps and mobile screens break apart that fixed position.
This is why Steyerl speaks of free fall. It does not mean that the image physically falls; it means that there is no longer a shared and secure viewpoint from which to orient it. Read together, free fall and the poor image describe images that change scale, context and meaning as they pass among bodies, devices and networks.
