LA
PIEL DEL
FILM

THE
SKIN OF
THE FILM

Some images are looked at as if they were touched.
Laura U. Marks calls haptic visuality a way of looking that approaches an image as if exploring its surface, texture and stored memory.
superficie → tacto → memoria → imagen
surface → touch → memory → image

Marks distinguishes optical from haptic looking. Optical looking seeks to recognize objects from a stable distance. Haptic looking moves closer when an image is blurry, grainy or fragmentary: instead of mastering it, the eyes travel across its edges and surfaces.

This does not mean literally touching a screen. It is a way of looking in which visual texture activates bodily knowledge: weight, roughness, temperature and proximity. For Marks, this lets film and video work with memories that cannot appear as a clear narrative.

A haptic image is not a failed image. Its lack of sharpness can ask for another relation: less certainty about what we see and more attention to how the image affects us.

tres cosas para conservar
three things to keep
Haptic visuality looks at surfaces, texture and proximity, not only recognizable objects.
A blurry image can activate bodily memory without delivering a clear narrative.
A lack of sharpness can ask for attention, not correction.

Here “haptic” means a look that explores as if touching.
Reading 026 asked which conditions organize a first impression. Marks shifts attention toward the image’s surface: when we cannot resolve it immediately, which bodily memory or affect begins to work?
por ejemplo
for example

No intentes resolverlo enseguida.

Look at a blurry film still: a hand slowly moves across an old photograph. You cannot identify every detail, yet you see the grain, the paper’s creases and the hand’s movement.

Do not try to resolve it immediately. Move closer to the texture: does the image seem cold, rough, fragile? Then ask which memory or proximity this surface produces and what is lost when you only seek to recognize its object.

What does your looking know when it stops demanding a sharp image?

Every image offers a direction for reading, but that direction can be diverted or contested.
Learning to look also means noticing when a technology has turned a decision into something that appears natural.
máquina de error
error machine
The Error Machine forces a collision between the text being read and an external word. It does not seek a better explanation: it produces a failure that opens another question about the image.

Toda imagen que toca deja fricción.
Every image that touches leaves friction.

“Friction” comes from materials and is a TSIL intervention, not a concept attributed to Marks. It names the resistance that appears when two surfaces rub together. Applied to the image, it proposes that a blurry or grainy texture does not deliver meaning without effort: it makes looking linger and accept that not everything can be recognized immediately.

Toda imagen borrosa es una imagen incompleta.
Every blurry image is an incomplete image.
INCOMPLETA.
INCOMPLETE. It confuses a lack of sharpness with a lack of experience. Marks shows that texture can activate memory and proximity. Discarded.

These questions condense the tensions between the reading and its Error Machine. They speak to one another, move forward or backward across readings by different authors, and inherit previous contaminations to open questions that would not appear without error.
