SYNTAX
For Dondis, seeing does not automatically mean reading. An image can seem immediate, but its message depends on decisions: what is separated, repeated, contrasted and subordinated.
Visual literacy is not a fixed code like grammar. It is a practice for describing how an image is organised and asking what interpretation it encourages in the viewer.
Contrast organises differences: it can make something stand out, direct attention to one part or give it greater importance than the rest. A composition is therefore more than a surface: it also guides attention.
Open a news post on a phone: a photograph, a large headline, a red label and three small links. Before you read the text, size and colour already direct attention towards what seems urgent.
Save a screenshot and note the outlet, date and order in which its elements appear. Then cover the red label with your hand and look again; repeat with the headline. The interface keeps the same hierarchy, but hiding one element changes what you perceive.
The test does not assume that contrast is deceptive. It asks which reading becomes more likely when a platform makes one item larger, redder or earlier than the others.
