Forgetting is not simply an empty space either: it can destroy traces, but it also leaves open the possibility that something remains in reserve and can be remembered again.

The carry arrives asking when an image remains the same if every system it passes through also transforms it. Ricœur shifts the problem toward the past: an image may persist precisely by making something appear that is no longer there.
