LO DIGITAL
TIENE SUELO

THE DIGITAL
HAS A GROUND

Jussi Parikka
Which part of this image began before the screen existed?
Parikka’s media geology follows a digital image to its earthly conditions: minerals, energy, labor, and residue.

mineral →device →image →residue

A digital image seems immaterial, yet it depends on minerals, chemicals, energy, and labor. Media geology studies this earthly base that the screen usually hides.

Parikka uses deep time to compare scales: materials formed over millions of years enter devices used for only a few years. A medium begins before the factory and continues after disposal.

Once discarded, phones, batteries, and circuits become electronic waste. The environment does not surround media: it runs through them, sustains their operation, and receives their remains.

tres cosas para conservar
three things to keep
Every digital image has a material support.
A medium’s life exceeds the time we use it.
What appears weightless leaves lasting waste.

Reading 005 asked which part of a photograph is decided by the photographer and which is anticipated by the apparatus. Parikka takes the question further back: before programming images, the apparatus must be made. Its program rests on minerals, energy, manufacturing, and labor.

Open an everyday photograph on your phone: a meal, a pet, or someone close to you. Describe what is visible and check the original file, date, full frame, adjacent photographs, and added text.

Then view the same file on a computer or as a print. Compare crop, size, brightness, interface, order, and attention. Identify the phone model and consult public information about one component—the screen, battery, or cable—without opening the device or assuming an origin. Minerals do not determine the photograph’s meaning, but they reveal a history the interface hides: extraction, manufacture, use, and disposal. What do you stop seeing when the image appears weightless?

residuo
residue
A material route does not exhaust an image’s meaning; it prevents us from imagining it without ground, labor, or remains.

To understand a digital image, it is enough to extract a sample from its support.

In medicine, a biopsy removes a small tissue sample for examination. TSIL borrows the word as an analogy: it does not belong to Parikka and does not invite us to physically open a device.

A battery, a solder joint, or a dust particle can change the scale of inquiry and lead toward extraction, manufacture, labor, and wear. But one component cannot explain a supply chain or an image’s meaning by itself: it needs documents, context, and verifiable uses.

Which material history becomes visible when you follow one component of the device displaying this image?

A higher-resolution image contains a deeper geology.
PROFUNDIDAD LITERAL.
LITERAL DEPTH. It confuses pixel count with the material history of the system that produces them. Discarded.
