PRODUCES EFFECTS
Solemos llamar interfaz a una pantalla, un menú o una ventana. Para Galloway no es solo lo que vemos: es una zona de actividad que pone en relación sistemas, imágenes y personas.
Por eso la interfaz no es una cosa, sino un proceso. Produce un efecto: convierte operaciones complejas en formas visibles que podemos reconocer y utilizar.
Esa traducción nunca es neutral. Al transformar datos y operaciones en opciones accesibles, la interfaz selecciona qué aparece, cómo podemos actuar y qué permanece fuera de la vista. Su transparencia no elimina la mediación: hace que dejemos de advertirla.
Además, cada interfaz lleva la historia de la sociedad que la produjo. Galloway llama «alegoría del control» a leer políticamente su diseño: preguntar qué relaciones permite, cuáles limita y cuáles presenta como naturales.
We usually call a screen, menu, or window an interface. For Galloway it is not only what we see: it is a zone of activity that brings systems, images, and people into relation.
The interface is therefore not a thing but a process. It produces an effect: it turns complex operations into visible forms that we can recognize and use.
This translation is never neutral. By transforming data and operations into accessible options, the interface selects what appears, how we can act, and what remains out of view. Its transparency does not remove mediation: it makes us stop noticing it.
Every interface also carries the history of the society that produced it. Galloway calls the political reading of its design a “control allegory”: asking which relations it enables, which it limits, and which it presents as natural.

Open a family photograph in your phone’s gallery. First check the original file, its date, full frame, adjacent images, and any added text.
Then view its thumbnail, open it full screen, and send it in a message. Check whether the application preserved the file or produced a preview, crop, or compressed copy. Compare scale, neighboring images, labels, order, and available actions. The interface does not determine meaning on its own: the scene and its history still matter. What changed in your reading, and what changed materially in the image?
En inmunología, el rechazo ocurre cuando el sistema inmune reconoce un tejido trasplantado como extraño y lo ataca. TSIL toma la palabra como analogía: no pertenece a Galloway ni describe literalmente al software.
Una interfaz puede aceptar ciertos formatos, ocultar metadatos o transformar dimensiones. Pero «rechazo» atribuye intención a un proceso distribuido: algo puede quedar fuera por una incompatibilidad del archivo, una compresión automática, una regla de la plataforma o la atención del usuario. Para comprobarlo hay que comparar el original, la versión mostrada, sus metadatos, su contexto y las acciones permitidas. Importa identificar qué operación excluye o transforma, no suponer un rechazo.
In immunology, rejection occurs when the immune system recognizes transplanted tissue as foreign and attacks it. TSIL borrows the word as an analogy: it does not belong to Galloway and does not literally describe software.
An interface may accept certain formats, hide metadata, or transform dimensions. But “rejection” assigns intention to a distributed process: something may remain outside because of file incompatibility, automatic compression, a platform rule, or the user’s attention. To test this, compare the original, the displayed version, their metadata and context, and the actions allowed. What matters is identifying which operation excludes or transforms, not assuming rejection.
