Mitchell propone desplazar provisionalmente el deseo desde quienes producen o miran una imagen hacia la propia imagen. No afirma que las imágenes sean personas: usa esa ficción para preguntar por sus faltas, demandas y modos de dirigirse a alguien.

La pregunta no convierte a la imagen en un sujeto soberano. La trata provisionalmente como un cuasiagente débil, marcado por dependencias y carencias. Lo que parece pedir no coincide necesariamente con su mensaje, con el deseo del artista ni con el efecto que produce.

The usual questions ask what images mean and what they do to those who see them. Desire is generally located in the artist or the beholder. Mitchell tries another starting point: asking what the picture wants.
The question does not turn the image into a sovereign subject. It provisionally treats it as a weak quasi-agent, marked by dependencies and lacks. What it seems to ask for does not necessarily coincide with its message, the artist's desire or the effect it produces.
Mitchell proposes pausing interpretation before mastering the image with a ready-made explanation. Asking what it wants makes the relation visible: whom it addresses, what it needs, what it excludes and what it cannot show. The answer may also be nothing.
