BESIDE ITSELF
Painting has always depended on circuits of distribution and exhibition. Joselit shifts the question: how can painting itself make those relations visible? A network here includes people, spaces and histories; it does not simply mean the Internet.
In Lux Interior, Jutta Koether reworks a Poussin and places her painting on a wall that seems to step onstage. Her performances and the lighting turn the canvas into an interlocutor. The passage between 1651 and 2009 intersects with another passage: between the painted surface and the bodies around it.
Joselit calls painting transitive when it holds these internal and external movements in suspension. Storing or selling a work does not permanently cancel its relations either: it changes the states and speeds of its circulation. This does not free painting from the market. It challenges the idea that a purchase ends its social life.
