THE
STACK
THE
STACK
Benjamin H. Bratton
How many layers of infrastructure lie between your screen, and the planet?
Bratton proposes thinking of planetary-scale computation as an accidental megastructure composed of interdependent layers. Earth, Cloud, City, Address, Interface, and User are not separate systems: together they produce an architecture that organizes circulation, identification, access, and governance.

Bratton gathers infrastructures usually thought of separately—cloud platforms, smart grids, cities, interfaces, addressing systems, users, and automation—and models them as a single planetary-scale computational megastructure: The Stack.
The model is organized into six layers: Earth, Cloud, City, Address, Interface, and User. Each layer has its own functions, but only makes sense through vertical, and transversal relations with the others. Material, computational, social, and human systems are thus entangled within the same architecture.
The significance of the Stack is not only technical. Bratton also understands it as an architecture of governance: addresses, platforms, interfaces, and users distribute positions, access, and capacities for action. Computation does not simply take place on the planet from outside; it actively reorganizes its geography.
tres cosas para conservar
three things to keep
An apparently local computational operation can depend on an architecture spanning scales from terrestrial matter to interface, and user.
Layers are not isolated floors: they form a modular structure whose relations produce capacities that no layer possesses on its own.
Addressing something is not merely naming it; an address participates in making it locatable, and operable within a network of relations.
punto de arrastre
carry point
Here the tension inherited from the previous reading enters: it brings a prior question, intuition or problem into friction with the current reading.
Kittler's carry asked when the technical route of a signal stops being transport, and begins to become a transformation of the image. Bratton radically expands that route: an operation can pass through material layers, cloud infrastructures, addressing systems, interfaces, and users. The route no longer belongs to a single apparatus; it forms part of a planetary architecture determining where something can be located, processed, and presented.

bifurcación
bifurcation
The image is an object that passes through an infrastructure composed of different technical layers.
The image that appears may be a temporary effect of that route across layers, so that infrastructure participates in what we identify as the image.

An image visible on a screen can depend on processes occurring simultaneously at material, geographical, and computational scales far removed from that screen.
Changing the address, platform, or layer through which an object circulates can alter its possibilities of access, and operation even if its pixels remain identical.
