EL ACCIDENTE

ACCIDENT
For Virilio, the accident does not arrive from outside to interrupt a technology that had been working correctly. The shipwreck is born with the ship and the derailment with the train. The possibility of failure belongs to invention from its origin.
Contemporary acceleration makes accidents spread with greater speed and reach. A local failure can become simultaneous and affect entire systems. Speed does not merely reduce response time: it also changes the scale of what can break.
Virilio imagines an exhibition of the accident. To show it would not celebrate catastrophe, but make visible the negative knowledge that progress tends to hide. The accident reveals the matter, limits and decisions excluded by the stable image of innovation.
