PATRONES
Y CORRECCIÓN
SCHEMA
AND CORRECTION
Gombrich asks how a surface of marks comes to look like a world. His answer does not begin with innocent sight: before recognising a face, a body or depth, we already expect something.
He calls that provisional formula a schema —for a face, a cloud or a room. It is not a copy of reality but a working hypothesis. Correction begins when a mark, proportion or contrast does not fit: the detail is separated, compared and the hypothesis is adjusted.
Making and looking at an image therefore share a sequence: do not immediately accept what feels familiar; distinguish its parts; rebuild a reading from the simplest elements; then check again that no important detail has been left out. The viewer, too, either corrects or stops correcting their own schema.
Open a small, ambiguous image: an AI-made face, a night photograph or a compressed thumbnail. First, do not treat the figure you recognise as certain. Say what you see and point to the minimum evidence that made you say it.
Then divide the image: enlarge it, cover one area, inspect the edge, crop, source, date and sequence. Find the original file or an earlier frame. A shadow can look like hair; a pixel like an eye; an edge like the outline of a figure.
Finally, rebuild the reading and check whether you left out any detail that contradicts it. The test does not prove that every reading is false: it shows which schema was working before the image seemed self-evident.
